Transfer of Schools

Eligibility: An F-1 student is eligible for transfer to another USCIS approved school if the student:

  • is a bona fide nonimmigrant student;
  • has been enrolled full-time at the school he/she was last authorized to attend during the term immediately preceding the transfer or last vacation period;
  • plans to be a full-time student at the new school.

Generally, you must attend a university one semester before transferring. If you are transferring schools while staying in the United States, you must obtain a letter of release from the ISS(International Student Services Office) at the pervious school stating whether you are in lawful F-1 status, the length of time you attended the school, and any pertinent academic or immigration information.

If you are transferring to SIUC, make an appointment with ISS within 15 days after classes begin. Also bring to this appointment your I-20 forms from both schools, the letter from the previous school, and your passport.

If you have not maintained F-1 status at the school last authorized to attend, you are not eligible, according to INS regulations, to transfer and must apply for reinstatement to student status.

For J-1 transfer, see the J-1 Responsible Office at the International Office immediately.
