Le Petit Grand Tour d'Architecture

The theme of this eleventh expedition is to trace the lineage of the classical orders through England, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Greece and Turkey to the cultural aspects of modern day architecture and life. The faculty are experienced travelers as well as experienced program directors.

Short-term Program Details

Location:

The locations visited will vary. The 2009 program will visit sites in England, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Greece and Turkey.

Highlights:

The Little Grand Tour of Architecture or Le Petit Grand Tour d'Architecture is one of the most successful travel study programs at SIUC. We investigate the interconnected nature of the arts, history, environmental psychology, and architecture using the built environment as the foundation for the study. Students will learn to critically examine the built environment by learning how architecture expresses human cultures, social structure, economic and political status, and spiritual beliefs. ARC 444 is open to all majors and is identified as an Interdisciplinary University Core Curriculum course substitute for ARC 314i - Expression in Architecture.

Jon Davey, Associate professor, School of Architecture. The director has over 30 years of travel experience to Europe, Asia, Cuba, and Africa, and with credentials in architecture, architectural history, and expertise in digital imagery and computer graphics insuring an unrivaled Grand Tour.

Program Fee:

Estimated at $4,300 for those 22 years old and younger; $4,900 for those 23 and older. The program fee includes round-trip airfare from our departure city (Chicago), lodging with private bath (see Housing below), breakfast and dinner daily, licensed local guides and visits to a number of sites of architectural or historic interest.

Other Costs:

The program fee does not include SIUC tuition, additional meals, passport and other other miscellaneous personal costs.

Financial Aid:

Most forms of financial aid will apply. SIUC undergradautes are eligible to apply for two $500 scholarships.

Housing:

Particiants will stay in hotels with private baths (four to a room for 22 and under; two to a room for those 23+) plus one night ferry accommodation.

Transportation:

Group will depart from Chicago to London, travel overland via Eurostar train, coach, ferry and ship. Return will be from Athens to Chicago.

Additional Information:

During the exploration or architecture and culture, the students capture their experienced with digital cameras, creating their own personal travel Web Pages. The students' digital journal is periodically up-linked to the www.siu.edu/~archtour/ site, sharing the excitement of the travel via the Internet to the rest of the world.
