IPS - Study Abroad Programs
Social, Health & Human Services in Ecuador
Field visits and seminars will observe and study the social, health and human services in Quito, Ecuador and the surrounding rural areas. Opportunities for hiking, biking, and exploring rural villages, and other outdoor activities such as white water rafting, and time to experience Ecuadorian music, dance, and cooking. The hot springs at Baños near Rio Bamba, the Otavalo Market, the San Antonio de Ibarra Woodcarving, the Museo de la Ciudad San Francisco, the Museo Guayasamin, and other points of interest are on the itinerary.

| Highlights: |
Site visits and study of HIV-Aids, gerontology, child welfare, prisons, disaster interventions related to the volcanic eruption of Tunguragua, Trafficking in Human Persons and USAID policy, substance abuse services, disability services, analysis of native Quechua families, an examination of traditional and modern medicine and the local religious influences, time with an Afro Ecuadorian Community of Chota, education policy, and a firsthand view of a progressive labor policy at a flower farm in the Andes Mountains. Time to study and enjoy the eco-diversity and outdoor activities of the Amazon Jungle and Andes Mountain Ranges. |

| Program Fee: |
$2,895. Includes round trip transportation from Chicago O’Hare airport to Quito, Ecuador, program-related local transportation, shared lodging, most meals, entrance fees, and program administration. *NOTICE Alumni, professionals and non-credit students pay an additional $200.00 participant fee if not paying for academic credit at either SIUC or Case Western. We require this fee of all non-students, alumni and professionals since they are not paying the cost of tuition. |
| Other Costs: |
SIUC and Case Western tuition or CEU fees are not included. See NOTICE above. Personal expenses such as passport, spending money, laundry, transportation to and from Chicago O'Hare airport are not included. The $40.80 airport cash exit fee imposed by the Ecuadorian government is the student's responsibility. Optional activities will be offered such as additional dancing and language lessons, bike and hiking equipment rental and other excursions beyond the program itinerary. We estimate that students will need about $350 - $400 USD. Breakfast and one other meal per day will normally be provided. Expect to pay about eight to twelve dollars for a full dinner or lunch. While Ecuador has a local currency, US dollars are the standard exchange throughout the country. ATMs are available. Nominal tips are included for drivers and local assistance, nevertheless, some participants may want to give tips or make a voluntary donation to a social service organization. Students may organize donations of toys or books, etc. to service organizations. |
| Financial Aid: |
Financial aid may apply with the exact procedures depending on your home university. SIUC students enrolled full-time for Summer, 2010 are eligible. Students from other institutions should contact their home university study abroad or financial aid offices for their procedures. External students may not apply for financial aid through SIUC; that must be done through your home institution. SIUC expects to have two $500 scholarships available—subject to funding—for SIUC undergraduates only. |
| Housing: |
The Andean Study Center’s housing, Casa Foch, in Quito is our home base. Hotels and hostels will be provided while outside Quito. Students will share a room: double or triple occupancy. Person requesting a Single Room Supplement will pay an additional $500.00 to SIUC and should call SIUC at 618-453-1204 or henry5@siu.edu for availability. |
| Transportation: |
International transportation from Chicago O’Hare airport to Quito, Ecuador and return from Quito to Chicago O’Hare. The program fee is based on the O’Hare departure point with additional cost for any other departure point. Students will meet at Chicago O’Hare airport to depart as a group. Local program-related travel provided by Andean Study Center. Free time travel and personal activities and additional excursions are participant’s responsibility. |
