IPS - Study Abroad Programs

Short-term Programs

Why content yourself with learning about the world when you can experience it directly? From African culture in Ghana to the latest business ideas in Europe and more, SIUC offers a variety of travel/study seminars that meet your needs. Courses are offered during the summer months and intersessions. Taught by full-time faculty of the university, courses are offered world-wide in a variety of fields. Most travel / study courses do not require a specialized foreign language background. Program dates are subject to change.

Austria: Salzburg College Summer Session (May 14 to June 21, 2008)

Salzburg College will offer a summer session beginning in May, 2008. Students will be expected to take two classes (6 credits) from among the following options: German language studies (various levels), Understanding Austria: History, Politics & Culture, Austrian Literature and Culture, The European Union, Music History, the Mozart Project or music performance studies. Students will stay with Austrian families. There will also be a four day trip to Vienna, Austria. Application deadline: February 15, 2008.

Art & Design in the Scottish Highlands (Mid-May - Early June , 2009)

Hospitalfield House, our base in Scotland, is close to the center of the ancient kingdom of the Piets, the enigmatic Celtic people who have left us their carved standing stones and shadows of a rich oral tradition. We will explore these traditions and other streams of Scottish history and literature as we explore the geographic diversity of Scotland through mini-bus trips to the Highlands, the Glens, agricultural areas, and villages.

Bioarchaeological Field School in Italy (July, 2009)

This course gives students hands-on training in the excavation of human skeletal remains from a 2nd–4th century AD Roman cemetery in southern Italy. In addition to learning how to excavate Roman burials, students will develop skills in the documentation and analysis of skeletal remains and associated burial artifacts. Egypt: Ancient Legacies (Mid-May or Mid-June 2009)

This year's interdisciplinary and team-taught seminar will explore the contributions of Egypt to Western Civilization. Participants in the seminar will also be able to enroll in the parallel Greece seminar if they wish, since the dates are coordinated. The Egypt program will visit Cairo, Luxor,Abydos, Aswan, Lake Nasser, Abu Simbel, Alexandria and feature a Nile cruise. Web: www.ancientlegacies.org

French Language & Culture - Québec (Summer, 2008)

Students participating in the program will study French at the University of Laval in Québec, Canada. They will receive transfer credit at SIUC for their studies. Courses are offered at elementary, intermediate and advanced levels of French. This is also the 400th anniversary of the founding of Québec, a city with a strong European flavor. Greece: Ancient Legacies (Late May - Early June 2009)

This year's interdisciplinary and team-taught program will explore the contributions of Greece to Western Civilization (democracy, philosophy, and theater). Participants will also be able to enroll in the parallel programs to Egypt if they wish since the dates are coordinated. The Greek seminar will visit Athens, Delphi, Mycenae, Troy, Kusadasi, Ephesos, Priene, Miletos, Samos, and Kos. Also available through SIU Edwardsville.

Health Education and Injury Prevention in Germany (May 2009 TBA)

Microfinance in Bangladesh (December 27, 2008- January 11, 2009)

The SIUC School of Social Work and Case Western Reserve's Mandel School will offer a study abroad program to Bangladesh, focusing exclusively on the role of microfinance to alleviate poverty and nurture social entrepreneurship. The program will explore the basic ideas behind the microfinance revolution in Bangladesh and its historical significance. The program will be of interest to students of business, political science, economics, public administration, public health, non-profit management, social work and generally for those with an interest in economic and social development. Natural Resources of Ireland (Next offered in 2009)

Examine forestry management and recreational development in Ireland. There will be visits to a variety of sites and parks within the Republic of Ireland including Avondale House, Glendalough Monastery, the Rock of Cashel, Ross Castle, Muckross House and gardens, Derrcunihy Woods, Craggonowen, Connemara National Park, and Burren National Park.

Social  Services in Urban and Rural Ecuador (May 25 - June 9, 2009)

Through field visits and seminars, students and professionals will observe and study the social and health services in Quito, Ecuador and the surrounding rural areas. The SIUC SSW will work closely with the US Embassy, USAID, Catholic University, and the Andean Study Center. Please check back for details.

Social Work in the Americas (Not offered in 2009)

Oaxaca is the political and economic center of the state of Oaxaca, as well as the home of two universities. The program features an interdisciplinary focus through field trips to community and social services as well as archaeological sites at Mitla and Monte Alban, the home of Benito Juarez, the Santo Domingo church and Anthropological Museum of Pre-Hispanic Art, Coyotepec (traditional black pottery), San Martin (traditional wooden carvings), and Teotitlan (traditional weaving).

Social Work in Egypt (December 29 , 2008 - January 10, 2009)

The SIUC School of Social Work is offering an exciting study abroad course in Cairo, Egypt this winter break. Building on the concepts of globalization and international social work education, the course intends to provide US students with a unique experience in human services of developing worlds. Students will have the opportunity to learn about social policy developed in Egypt, to address social problems i.e. poverty, unemployment, drug addiction, migration, and AIDs. More...

India: Innovative Approaches to Social Development (TBA)

This program will introduce students to social development and policy issues in India such as poverty alleviation, non-formal education, prostitution, HIV-AIDS and multicultural aspects of healthcare in the Indian context.The program will include visits to three major cities in India: Mumbai (Bombay), New Delhi and Jaipur along with a cultural visit to the Taj Mahal. The Collapse of Communism and Beyond

Northern Nature and Environment Studies

University of Oulu
Animal and Plant Ecology. Field courses in aquatic animals, ecological botany, and terrestrial animals at the university's research stations in northern Finland.

Summer Program in Human Sciences

Interdisciplinary courses in education, communication, leadership & management, psychology and sport management. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students.

Contemporary Indian Society and Culture

University of Hyderabad
Three-credit course introducing India and another three credit choice from courses in anthropology, communications, English, folk culture studies, languages, Indian philosophy, or Women's Studies.

Korean and Asian Studies

Ajou University
Intensive Korean, East Asian/Korean studies and International Business courses in English. Language option: beginning or intermediate level. Weekly cultural workshops in traditional Korean calligraphy, music, archery, pottery making and martial arts. Trips to Jeju Island.

Korean and Asian Studies

Yonsei University
Optional pre-session field trip to tour major places of interest outside of Seoul. Korean language course plus lessons in Geomdo, Taekwondo, ceramics, bamboo flute, folk music, calligraphy, painting, and pottery.

Buddhism and Thai Society

Thammasat University
Focuses on the complex relationship between Buddhism and Thai history, politics, economics, education, literature, law, arts and theatre. Site visits to Ayudhaya, Pimai, Surin, and Chiang Mai.

Intensive French language program at the beginner, low-intermediate, and advanced-intermediate levels at the Université de Savoie, Chambéry.

Philipps-Universität Marburg: European Studies

Seminars taught in German or English in political science, economics and cultural studies. German language courses at all levels.

Universität Hannover: Engineering Internship + German

Six-week internship plus German language courses at all levels.

Technische Universität Braunschweig: Two options

1) Six-week intensive German language and civilization course with 2-day excursions to Berlin and Hamburg. Classes available for advanced beginner, intermediate and advanced level students. 2) Six-week scientific work and practical training in engineering, computer science and biosciences plus German at all levels.

Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University

Eight-week program of intensive beginner to intermediate Japanese language courses. Opportunity to take other academic courses taught in English.

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Chile

Six-week program in Spanish language and Chilean culture combines intensive language study and an overview of national literature and modern social and political issues in Chile.
