Short-term Programs
Why content yourself with learning about the world when you can experience it directly? From African culture in Kenya to the latest business ideas in Europe and more, SIUC offers a variety of short-term seminars that meet your needs. Courses are offered during the summer months and intersessions. Taught by full-time faculty of the university, courses are offered world-wide in a variety of fields. Most travel / study courses do not require a specialized foreign language background. Program dates are subject to change.

African Lives - Culture, Politics & Performance (June 13 - July 25, 2010)
This program will examine the intersections between culture, politics and performance in the context of Africa and the African Diaspora. The program will visit Nigeria, Barbados and London to connect directly with ordinary Africans in everyday life situations and in formal settings. The platforms of theatrical performance, cinema, photography and journalism will form the interdisciplinary magnets for our engagement with the host cultures. More...
Architectural Field Studies in Egypt (Spring Break 2010)
Explore the art and architecture of Egypt beginning with Memphis, the first capital of a united Egypt to Sakkara, Cairo, Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Luxor Karnak and the Valley of the Kings. Contact: Jon Davey, School of Architecture, jdavey@siu.edu, 453-3734.
Architectural Field Studies in Europe (May 19 - 31, 2010)
Le Petit Grand Tour d'Architecture - Spend 24 days in Europe, exploring sites in Italy and Greece. This year's expedition will trace the lineage of the classical orders through France, Germany, Italy and Greece to the cultural aspects of modern day architecture and life. More...
Art & Design in the Scottish Highlands (Mid-May - Early June , 2010)
Hospitalfield House, our base in Scotland, is close to the center of the ancient kingdom of the Piets, the enigmatic Celtic people who have left us their carved standing stones and shadows of a rich oral tradition. We will explore these traditions and other streams of Scottish history and literature as we explore the geographic diversity of Scotland through mini-bus trips to the Highlands, the Glens, agricultural areas, and villages.

Egypt: Ancient Legacies (May 17 - 28 or June 9 - July 20, 2010)
This year's interdisciplinary and team-taught seminar will explore the contributions of Egypt to Western Civilization. Participants in the seminar will also be able to enroll in the parallel Greece and southern Italy seminars if they wish, since the dates are coordinated. The Egypt program will visit Cairo, Luxor, Abydos, Aswan, Lake Nasser, Abu Simbel, Alexandria and feature a Nile cruise.

French Language & Culture - Paris (Not offered in 2010)
History of Paris through its Monuments: This two week program in late May will review the history, culture, society and literature of Paris in context. Requires intermediate level or above French. Contact Virginia Donovan, Foreign Languages and Literatures, 536-5571.
Greece: Ancient Legacies (June 14 - 28, 2010)
This year's interdisciplinary and team-taught program will explore the contributions of Greece to Western Civilization (democracy, philosophy, and theater). Participants will also be able to enroll in the parallel programs to Egypt if they wish since the dates are coordinated. The Greek seminar will visit Athens, Olympia, Mycenae, Crete, Santorini and Mykonos.

Kenya Service-Learning (May/June TBA, 2010)
Experience the real Kenya through this program that combines cross-country tours, living with Kenyan hosts and working with elementary school children. Our project wil be to refurbish and establish a village school library. There is a new option this year to explore Kenyan higher education specifically for graduate students in higher education and college student personnel. Microenterprise & Social Development in Bangladesh (December 26, 2009 - January 10, 2010)
The SIUC School of Social Work and Case Western Reserve's Mandel School will offer a study abroad program to Bangladesh, focusing exclusively on the role of microenterprises to alleviate poverty and nurture social entrepreneurship. The program will explore the basic ideas behind the microenterprise revolution in Bangladesh and its historical significance. The program will be of interest to students of business, political science, economics, public administration, public health, non-profit management, social work and generally for those with an interest in economic and social development. Morocco: Contemporary Muslim Women (Mid-May - Mid-June, 2010)
We have many stereotypes of contemporary Muslim women, but what is the reality? This program will visit Morocco, a North African Muslim nation, to learn from a variety of women's organizations about their priorities and how they address women's issues and how those are shaped by being in an Islamic society. Natural Resources of Ireland (Next offered Summer, 2011)
Examine forestry management and recreational development in Ireland. There will be visits to a variety of sites and parks within the Republic of Ireland including Avondale House, Glendalough Monastery, the Rock of Cashel, Ross Castle, Muckross House and gardens, Derrcunihy Woods, Craggonowen, Connemara National Park, and Burren National Park.

Social Work in Egypt (May 16 - 28, 2010)
The SIUC School of Social Work is offering an exciting study abroad course in Cairo, Egypt this winter break. Building on the concepts of globalization and international social work education, the course intends to provide US students with a unique experience in human services of developing worlds. Students will have the opportunity to learn about social policy developed in Egypt, to address social problems i.e. poverty, unemployment, drug addiction, migration, and AIDs. More...
Social Work in Germany (January 4 - 12 and May 28 -June 10, 2010)
The program will focus on the increasingly important connection of human rights to social work, from both European and US perspectives. Field visits and seminars will focus on both political and social issues, including democratic concepts of human rights. More..
