ISEP - International Student Exchange Program

ISEP is a network of 275 colleges and universities in 39 (incl. USA) countries cooperating to provide affordable access to international education for a diverse student population. ISEP students gain intercultural competence through integration into their host institution and host culture while exploring the international dimensions of their academic field.

Exchange Details

Location:

ISEP currently consists of 137 international members in 38 countries. There are sites in Asia, Africa, the Americas, Australia and Europe.

Highlights:
  • Exchange costs based on SIUC tuition, fees room and board
  • One application may cover multiple program sites
  • Wide range of opportunities in English as well as foreign languages
Host Institution:

Selected at time of application and placement.

Dates:

Terms are based on the academic calendar of the host university which may vary significantly from the North American academic calendar. Please see individual program listings for specifics.

There are also summer exchanges available.

Fields of Study:

Generally, most fields offered at the host university are available to ISEP students. There are exceptions as noted in the institutional description. For countries where the main language of instruction is not English, you must be fluent in that language. many countries do have special offerings in English, but this will not cover all subjects. Please see individual program listings for specifics.

Level of Study:

Undergraduate and graduate.

Number of Credits:

Typically 12 - 15 per semester

Eligibility:
  • You must have successfully completed at least one year of college study before undertaking the exchange. For some places, you must have junior standing at the time of the exchange.
  • 2.75 Grade Point Average
  • Appropriate foreign language skills where required
Staff:

Classes are taught by the faculty of the host university.

Open; the number of possible exchange students to a particular will vary depending on the site.

Program Fee:

$315 application fee payable to ISEP. The ISEP exchange fee is based on the cost of SIUC tuition, fees, room and board (including break periods) and administration.

Other Costs:

International transportation, passport, visa fees if any, books and supplies, and other personal expenses

Financial Aid:

All forms of federal and state aid as well as most private scholarships. There are also national scholarships and ISEP-specific scholarships. See the Financial Aid section of our Getting Ready page for more information.

Housing:

This will vary with the institutional hosts and is specified under the individual program listings.

Transportation:

Student arranges own international transportation.

Additional Information:

ISEP also offers program options under ISEP Direct. There are also Summer exchanges and ISEP Direct program opportunities. These have different costs and different applications.

Application Deadline:

January 15 priority deadline* for Fall/academic year and selected Spring** placements

August 1 priority deadline for Spring placements

*There are often places available after the priority deadline, but this will depend on the site. Contact Study Abroad Programs for further information.

**For Fall, Spring or full-year placements at the following sites, apply by January 15: Chinese U. of Hong Kong; Nice, Paul Cézanne or Paul Valéry in France; U. of Ghana; U. of Stellenbosch in South AFrica; Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific U., Kansai Gaidai U., Nanzan or Ritsumeikan

 in Japan; U. of Málaga in Spain and the U. of Lausanne in Switzerland.

Apply Now Please note that there are different versions for regular ISEP/ISEP Direct applications, Australia/New Zealand applications and Short-term (usually summer) offerings. All are pdf files which you may complete and then print out or simply print out and complete by hand.
