Bioarchaeology in ItalyStudents on-site measuring skeleton

This course gives students hands-on training in the excavation of human skeletal remains from a  Roman cemetery in southern Italy. In addition to learning how to excavate Roman burials, students will develop skills in the documentation and analysis of skeletal remains and associated burial artifacts. Students will receive credit for a 3-credit course upon successful completion of the field school.

Short-term Program Details

Location:

We will be excavating at the Roman period site of Vagnari, located outside the modern city of Gravina in Puglia. Our accommodations are in the city of Gravina and students will be transported to the site daily (Mon. – Fri.)

Highlights:

- excavation of a Roman cemetery
- weekend outings to archaeological sites (e.g., Pompeii)
- month-long cultural immersion in an Italian city

June 26 – August 2, 2008 (including travel days)

Anthropology 496, Field School in Archaeology

Level of Study:

Undergraduate or graduate

Eligibility:

No prerequisites, but background in Anthropology, Classics, or Archaeology is an asset

Dr. Tracy Prowse, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Anthropology
Dr. Prowse is a biological anthropologist who has worked on archaeological excavations in Italy for 18 years.

Est. $2,500.00

Other Costs:

SIUC tuition is not included. Students arrange own transportation to site. Participants will meet a graduate assistant in Rome on June 27, stay one night there and go by rail the next morning. Personal costs such as passport, laundry, personal travel, etc. are not included.

Financial Aid:

Housing:

Shared apartment, with breakfast and lunch prepared by students. Dinners each evening are at 'Zia Rosa's' restaurant (included in the course fee).

Transportation:

Students purchase their own airline tickets from the US/Canada to Italy and travel to Gravina by regional train. These costs, including hotel night in Rome, are not covered by the course fees. Local transportation to/from the site during the week is covered by the course fees. Optional weekend field trips are paid for by the student.
