Location:

Hirakata City, Japan (between Osaka and Kyoto)

Japanese language

Asian Studies (politics, economics, business, sociology, psychology, communication, philosophy, anthropology, history, art and literature) All in English.

Level of Study:

Japanese - Begining to advanced (For exchange students must be intermediate or above)

Asian Studies ( junior/senior level)

Number of Credits:

12-15 per semester

Eligibility:
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA overall (3.25 in major)
  • Applcant must have completed one year of Japanese before beginning exchange
  • Preference wil lbe give to juniors and seniors
  • Strong preference for students taking a major or minor in Japanese, Foreign Language & International Trade, East Asian Studies or related special major

Courses are taught by the faculty of Kansai Gaidai University, both Japanese and international

1-2 per year

Program Fee:

Our students pay SIUC tuition, fees, and room & board (based on residence hall charge) plus a small exchange fee. Tuition, fees, and housing costs at Kansai Gaidai will be waived. Students will receive an allowance for meal costs.

Other Costs:

Students are responsible for their own transportation, books & supplies, and personal expenses.

Financial Aid:

Financial aid applies.

Housing:

Housing is either in dormitories (Japanese-style) or with families in the Osaka area. The off-campus housing with families is highly recommended, but does require some commuting.

Transportation:

Students arrange their own internatianl and local transportation. Kansai Gaidai does provide a pick-up service at the airport with sufficient notice.

Additional Information:

After a week of on-site orientation, participants will attend the School of Asian Studies at Kansai Gaidai for one or two semesters. Students must enroll full-time each semester and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA to continue in the program. All students must enroll in one of the spoken Japanese courses appropriate to their language level. Remaining courses are selected from those offered by the School of Asian Studies. Courses in most non-science disciplines are offered.

Application Deadline:

February 15 for the following Fall (Campus priority deadline)

October 1 for the following Spring (Campus priority deadline)

NOTE: Spaces may fill up prior to these deadlines due to high demand.
